The oldest high school yards record in the books has been broken.

At the 2019 Georgia 6-7A State Championships, Mill Creek High School’s Jake Magahey wrote his name in the history books in the 500 free. His time of 4:15.63 broke Jeff Kostoff of Upland High School’s previous National Public High School record of 4:16.39 set in 1983.

Magahey’s splits:

  • 100 – 49.28
  • 200 – 1:40.15 (50.87)
  • 300 – 2:31.88 (51.73)
  • 400 – 3:23.99 (52.11)
  • 500 – 4:15.63 (51.64)

The National Independent High School record in the event is 4:12.87 set by Santa Margarita Catholic’s Grant Shoults in 2016, which still stands as the overall mark.

Before Magahey’s stellar performance, Kostoff’s mark stood as the oldest boys’ record to date. The oldest record, for boys or girls and any course, is Tracy Caulkins’ 100 SCM breaststroke of 1:07.47 set in 1981. Her record remains the indepedenent and overall high school mark.

Magahey does his club swimming with SwimAtlanta and his best time in the 500 free is a 4:14.61 that was fast enough to win the event at Juniors East in December where he also took first in the mile. The junior also won the 200 free (1:35.62) at the 2019 Georgia State Championships.

Jack Conger broke Kostoff’s record with a 4:13 in 2013, swimming for a private school (Good Counsel). Seems like that would’ve been worth a mention in this story.

So awesome to witness this record in person. Everyone in the sold out Georgia Tech Pool stadium there to watch our high school teams swim were on our feet screaming for Jake from lap 5 on and Jake responded to the cheers! Something I will never forget. Congratulations!

Kostoff’s 4:16.39 wasn’t just a HS record. It was an AMERICAN record. And I thought Jack Conger finally broke the ‘83 H.S. record a few yrs ago with a 4:13…, then by Grant Shoults 1 yr later (4:12)…? Confused.
