IUPUI Jaguar Women Play Grinch to Valpo Ladies, Completing Sweep of Dual Meets Started by Men

INDIANAPOLIS, IN, December 22, 2004. THE IUPUI women's swimming and diving team got to open one of their Christmas presents early Tuesday afternoon by downing Mid-Con foe Valparaiso 129-101 in their last dual meet of 2004.

The school reported the teams were fairly even in individual wins, with IUPUI holding a slight 6-5 edge. However, the Jags won both relays and used their depth to pull out the win.

The 200 medley quartet of Kristen Krey (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont),Clare Helphinstine (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield), Kelly Miller (Aurora, Ohio/Twinsburg) and Lauren Heyde (Greenwood, Ind./Whiteland) opened up the meet with a win in a thrilling match-up. Though the Jags led the majority of the race, Valpo was within a body length the entire time. In the end, the Jaguars pulled out the win with Heyde outtouching her opponent by .06 seconds.

Valpo pulled ahead 30-23 with wins in the next two races. Lindsay Anderson (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) swam the 10th-fastest time in school history in finishing second in the 1000 free in 11:20.99. Heyde also finished second in the 200 free in 2:05.25.

Krey started the IUPUI comeback when she led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 50 freestyle for the Jags. She won the race with a time of 25.26. Amy Rowe (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) and Allison Rober (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) finished second (26.08) and third (26.12), respectively. That put IUPUI ahead 39-33.

Valpo pulled briefly back ahead 46-45 with a win in the 200 IM. However, Jennifer Ridenour (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) put IUPUI ahead to stay 54-53 with a win in the one-meter diving event. She registered the victory with a career-best score of 206.63 points. Ridenour completed her sweep of the diving events later in the program with a winning score of 180.98 points in the three-meter springboard.

After Miller won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:00.50, Krey picked up her second individual win of the meet. She finished first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.86.

Helphinestine helped the Jags clinch the meet with a win in the 100 breaststroke. She splashed to a time of 1:10.62, winning the race by 2.20 seconds.

Rowe, Miller, Rober and Ashley Jochum (Huntingburg, Ind./Southridge) put a stamp on the meet with a clocking of 1:44.02 in the 200 freestyle. They downed Valpo by 3.04 seconds to win the race.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Miller, Heyde, Kristen Krey (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont) and Jessica Schlottman (Mt. Vernon, Ind./Mt. Vernon) swam the fifth-quickest race in school history with a time of 3:41.95, best by an IUPUI relay team this year.

Allison Rober (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) and Olivia Bayer (Terre Haute, Ind./North Vigo) both swam team season-best times in their individual events. Rober had a time of 2:17.11 in the 200 IM, while Bayer completed the 200 back in 2:22.11.

IUPUI's first meet of the new year will be on Jan. 7-8 when they take part in the Univ. of Indianapolis Invitational.
