Italian Swimming Federation Releases Selection Criteria For 2016 SC World Championships
The Italian Swimming Federation, or Federazione Italiana Nuto (FIN), have released the selection criteria for the upcoming World Championships meet in December. The 2016 version of the World Championships will feature short course meter (SCM) racing and will be held in Windsor, Canada from December 6-11.
Four swimmers from Italy’s Olympic team in Rio have been pre-selected due to their success in Rio. Gregorio Paltrinieri earned the only gold medal for Italy with a dynamic win in the 1500-meter freestyle (14:34.57). Fellow distance star Gabrielle Detti garnered two bronze medals from the 400-meter (3:43.49)and 1500-meter (14:40.86) freestyles, while World Record holder Federica Pellegrini just missed out on the podium with a fourth place finish in the 200-meter freestyle (1:55.18). Luca Dotto will join as the fourth pre-selected athlete.
According to FIN’s website, the selection criteria for individual events are as follows:
- The finalist athletes in individual events at the Rio Olympic Games
- The winning athletes in individual events at long London 2016 and bath EURO for spots that are still available
- Where there are Olympic and non-Olympic events with no qualified athletes or empty spots, athletes who deliver performances from the period of November 1-19 that could put them into a final at the SC World Championships will be eligible.
- Additionally, the Technical Director of FIN will have the power to fill empty spots with young emerging swimmers
For relays the federation will choose the top four individual performances from the period of November 1-20, 2016 with the relay only swimming if the Technical Director believes that the relay could earn a top five finish at the SC World Championships in Windsor.
