Introduction of Semifinals Set for Upcoming Pro Series Stop in Austin
Introduction of Semifinals on Horizon for Upcoming Pro Series Stop in Austin
When the first USA Swimming Pro Series stop is held later this month in Austin, Texas, the meet will feature a prelims-semifinals-finals format for some events. This change from previous Pro Series competitions, which utilized a prelims-finals setup, was announced last year, and is now set to be instituted. At the time of the announcement, USA Swimming emphasized the need for more three-round setups.
“In preparation for what’s ahead in LA28, it has become clear we need to create more long-course racing opportunities for our National Team,” said Greg Meehan, Managing Director of the National Team, during the November announcement. “This new format at (the) Pro Swim Series meets in 2026 is a great first step by contesting some events in a prelims/semifinals/final format or a prelims/final distance format. It’s especially important in 2026 without a traditional nine-day meet to finish the long-course season.”
The first Pro Series meet will be held January 14-17 at the University of Texas’ Jamail Swim Center and will include semifinal rounds in the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly. Semifinals will also be held in the 200 individual medley. The women’s 800 freestyle will be conducted in a prelims-finals format, rather than in timed finals, which has been the approach in past Pro Series meets.
