WINNETKA, Illinois, March 4. THE Illinois Boys' High School State Championships took place at New Trier High School February 25-26. New Trier won the meet with 217 points, while Naperville Central took second with 163 points and University third with 96. Individually, two of America's high school stars highlighted the meet with blazing 100 breaststroke races.

Richwoods' Matt Elliott won both the 200 IM (1:48.76) and 100 breast. Elliott, who next year will swim for the University of Florida, posted a 53.80 in the 100 breast, just missing the National High School record of 53.66 set by Patrick Fowler back in 1998. Additionally, Neuqua Valley's Kevin Cordes, an incoming freshman at the University of Arizona, took second in 54.16, also close to Fowler's record.

Elliott's teammate Matt Grodecki won the 100 free in 45.17 and anchored two New Trier winning relays. Sam Skinner, Nels Snyder, David Schriesheim, and Grodecki won the 200 free relay in 1:24.58, while Skinner, Nick Killeen, Reed Malone, and Grodecki took the 500 free relay in 3:03.84.

Loyola Academy's Andrew Jovanovic and Hinsdale Central's Danny Thomson also earned double victories. Jovanovic took the 50 free (20.49) and 100 fly (48.73), while Thomson swept the 200 (1:37.56) and 500 free (4:21.04). Naperville Central's Sean Lehane finished first in the 100 back (50.28), and his teammates captured the 200 medley relay. Jeff Depew, Steven Van Deventer, Nate Weeks, and Pat May clocked 1:31.95 for the win. Centennial's Kegan Skelton won one-meter diving with 487.85 points.
