Illinois Boys High School State Championships

EVANSTON, Illinois, March 4. IT was a close meet at the Illinois Boys High School State Championships. Central won with 156 points followed by Neuqua Valley (153) and New Trier (151).

Neuqua Valley’s Grant Betulius (the 100 back champ in 49.64), Kevin Cordes, Brien Gerber, and Andrew Bratsos won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.34.

Senior Mitch Stoehr (Lake Forest) was a dual event winner in the 200 (1:38.79) and 100 (45.32) freestyles.

Richwoods’ Matt Elliott, who is a Swimming World five-star recruit, won the 200 IM (1:49.34) and the 100 breaststroke. He set a state record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.74. The previous record (55.56) was set by Naperville North’s Gianni Minervini in 1984.

Jordan Dyson of Hinsdale South won the diving competition (484.40). Glenbrook North’s Jonathan Roby took second (458.40) and Niles North’s Arsen Sarkisian placed third (412.95).

Mark Menis, Keith Piper, Matt O’Brien, and Danny Tucker had first-place finishes in the 200 (1:23.55) and 400 (3:04.93) freestyle relays.
