Hurd Scores 800m Gold in Front of Partisan Crowd

VICTORIA, British Columbia, Aug. 17. CANADIAN Andrew Hurd scored a gold medal during the initial event of day one finals at the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships on Thursday. In front of a home crowd, he notched a 7:55.88 to win the 800-meter freestyle.

Canada kept the crowd going as well with a bronze as Ryan Cochrane stopped the clock in 7:58.32 to push the home team into a medal lead with 2-1 against South Africa's Troyden Prinsloo’s silver-medal time of 7:56.82.

After trailing at the 450-meter mark to Prinsloo with a 4:29.45 split against the South African's 4:29.14, Hurd crept into the lead and continually built his advantage through the rest of the race.
