Houston Women Take Opening Relays at AAC Championships
The Houston Cougars opened the 2020 AAC Championships on the campus of Houston with wins in the women’s 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays. Cincinnati and East Carolina split the men’s relays on Wednesday night. The Houston women lead while East Carolina leads the men’s meet.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay
Houston was back at it again in the 200 medley relay but it was a much closer finish as the Cougars came out on top with a 1:37.60 ahead of SMU at 1:38.34.
Laura Laderoute (24.62), Peyton Kondis (26.96), Katie Higgins (23.95) and Mykenzie Leehy (22.07) missed SMU’s meet record from 2015 but swam well enough for the win as SMU’s team of Felicia Anderson (25.38), Gabriella Grobler (27.95), Erin Trahan (22.76) and Samantha Smith (22.25) finished in second.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay
East Carolina set the meet record in the men’s medley relay with a 1:25.91 as the team of Marek Osina (21.69), Lyubomir Epitropov (24.15), Gustavo Santos (20.35) and Pedro Gueiros (19.72) beat their own record from last season of 1:26.19. Connecticut finished as the runner-up with William Kearsey (21.64), Rowan King (24.23), Cooper Knapp (21.01) and Kyle Dunlap (19.77) not far behind in 1:26.65.

Women’s 800 Free Relay
Houston opened the meet with a 7:06.29 in the 800 free relay to lower its own meet record set two years ago. The Cougars missed the NCAA B cut but still swam well enough to win as Mykenzie Leehy (1:44.90), Samantha Medlin (1:46.72), Monique Rae (1:49.69) and Zarena Brown (1:44.98) dominated the race ahead of East Carolina (7:13.52) and Tulane (7:14.30).

Men’s 800 Free Relay
Cincinnati opened the men’s swimming competition with a 6:25.94 to win the 800 free relay with the team of Din Selmanovic (1:36.25), Murat Sadullaev (1:38.17), Michael Balcerak (1:35.26) and Alexander Fortman (1:36.26). The Bearcats were in a good race with SMU the whole way as the Mustangs finished second at 6:26.98 while East Carolina (6:27.14) was third.
