NEW COMMIT: The University of Houston has earned their first verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from Galena, Ohio native and talented breaststroker Grace Butcher.

Butcher swims year-round with the Ohio State Swim Club under head coach Kyle Goodrich and owns the Summer Juniors standard in both breaststroke events. She most recently competed at Indianpolis Speedo Sectionals where her highest finish wasa 17th-place showing in the 100m breast and raced both breaststroke events at Juniors East in December. This past summer, she placed fourth in the 50m breast and eighth in the 100m breast at Spire Speedo Sectionals.

Also competing for Olentangy High School, Butcher is a three-time Ohio State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American took sixth in the 100 breast and 13th in the 100 fly as a junior after finishing 10th in the former event during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Houston! I would like to thank my family, coaches, and God for helping me get here. The moment I stepped on campus I knew that it was a perfect fit to be a part of such a great team. Go Coogs!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 breast – 29.69
  • 100 breast – 1:02.55
  • 200 breast – 2:18.54
  • 200 IM – 2:09.75

Butcher will add much-needed breaststroke depth to the Cougars’ lineup when she arrives on campus as a member of the class of 2024 following the graduation of NCAA qualifier Peyton Kondis. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 100 breast as well as the B-final of the 200 breast at the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships where Houston earned their third-straight team title.
