High School Swimming Championships: Connecticut Girls Open

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, November 17. THE Darien Blue Wave defended its Connecticut Open Girls State High School Swimming and Diving Championship November 16 at Yale University’s swimming pool.

Darien collected 497 points for its victory, followed by New Canaan (411.5), Greenwich (335), Wilton (243.5) and McMahon/Norwalk (225).

The Blue Devils’ only victory came in the 200 yard medley relay, with seniors Elizabeth Kearney and Lia Barsanti joining sophomores Maggie Orem and Lauren Rutledge for a 1:48.26.

The runner-up New Haven quartet of senior Jenna Egan, sophomore Libby O’Hare, senior Alex Aliapoulos and sophomore Meghan Egan combined for a winning 1:37.49 in the 200 free relay; sophomore Katie Colwell joined Aliapoulos and the Egan sisters to bring home the 400 free relay event in a first-place 3:30.91.

Staples senior Verity Abel, who is heading to Duke this fall, defended her 500 free title, posting a 4:51.34 this year. She also improved on her second-place performance from 2012 in the 200 free to a winning 1:50.79.

Also earning two titles each were E.O. Smith junior Siobhan Dale (50 free, 23.55; 100 free, 51.94) and Abel’s teammate, sopohomore Amelia Bullock (100 fly, 55.38; 200 IM, 2:05.17).

Two freshmen–Weston’s Sophie Angus and Ridgefield’s Lindsey Gordon–dueled to a very close finish in the 100 breast, with Angus emerging first (1:05.80 to 1:05.93). Gordon’s classmate at Ridgefield, Marcie Maguire, began her high school championship career with a winning 56.44 in the 100 back.

Westhill sophomore Rachel Burston’s 441.35 points gave her the diving title, just ahead of New Canaan junior Kylie Towbin’s 434.50 points.
