High School State Swimming Championships: Michigan Boys Division 3

YPSILANTI, Michigan, March 11. GOING into the Michigan Boys Division 3 championships, held March 8-9 at Eastern Michigan University, East Grand Rapids High School figured to be the top team. They were going for their first title since 2009 and had 16 top-16 qualifiers ready to roll. Two Bloomfield Hills schools–Lahser and Cranbrook-Kingswood–were right behind waiting to take the title.

By just four points–278 to 274–East Grand Rapids secured their title over Cranbrook-Kingswood. Detroit Country Day slipped into third with 217 points. Lahser settled for fourth (194), followed by Chelsea with 177 points.

This marked the last time Lahser could go for a Division 3 title. Next fall, the Knights will combine with Andover High School (Division 2).

East Grand Rapids started out the meet with a division record 1:35.58 in the 200 medley relay. Junior Kevin Baumann led off, followed by seniors Matt Hooper, Casey Bloom and Nick Cowley. East Grand Rapids' 2011 team set the prior mark of 1:35.85. Lahser's 1:35.80 also fell below the division standard.

Hooper set a division record in the 100 breast with his 56.12, the third straight time he captured the event (he finished second as a freshman). His 56.12 erased Scott Yarbough's 2008 record of 58.15.

The meet ended with Cranbrook-Kingswood and Lahser posting identical times of 3:12.99 to share the 400 free relay title. Freshman Andrew Guan led off the Cranbrook-Kingswood quartet of sophomores Frankie Misra and Alessandro Guttilla, plus senior Matthew Liu; Lahser used the squad of juniors William Tener, Jack Ramonat and John Schihl , with senior Joe Finn swimming the second leg. Liu earned an individual title in the 100 fly (51.60).

Country Day's 200 free relay of juniors Billy Packer, Cal Coffman and Michael Nadolski–with sophomore Conor Ryan swimming second–were triumphant with their 1:26.61.

Parker Cook Weeks, a senior at Holland Christian, won the 200 free (1:41.21) and successfully defended his title in the 500 free (4:38.29). Also grabbing two titles was Chelsea junior David Alday, wound up just 8-hundredths short of a division record with his 1:52.88 in the 200 IM and came in first in the 100 free (46.85).

Henry Swett, a sophomore at Marshall, defended his diving victory with his score of 431.20 points. Also grabbing event victories were Ollie Smith, a junior at Milan (50 free, 21.04) and Grand Rapids Catholic Central freshman Joey Puglessi (100 back, 52.75).
