High School State Swimming Championships: Maryland 3A/2A/1A

COLLEGE Park, Maryland, February 28. POOLESVILLE High School claimed both the boys and girls championship titles at the Maryland 3A/2A/1A State Championships Feb. 22-23 at the University of Maryland in College Park. Both teams used depth to claim their victories; it also helped that they won five of the six offered relays.

Girls
Poolesville captured the girls competition with 313.5 points. C. Milton Wright finished second with 255 point. Damascus edged out Oakdale for third, 184-180, with Walkersville finishing fifth (160). Frederick finished in sixth, 3-1/2 points back at 156.5.

In the 200 free relay, Poolesville's squad of senior Cynthia Jih, sophomores Katie Dahlin and Dorit Song, and Sayaka Vaules combined for a winning 1:44.03. Another 40 points came from the 400 free relay of sophomore Lindsay Knapp, Song, Jih and senior Diana Hanson which posted a 3:44.61. C. Milton Wright prevented a Poolesville sweep with their 1:53.24 victory in the 200 MR with the team of sophomores Erika Abshire, Lauren O'Mara and Julia O'Mara, with freshman Megan Cowan swimming third.

Poolesville was also aided by individual wins from Hanson in the 200 IM (2:11.41) and Song in the 100 free (53.20). C. Milton Wright's Cowan picked up two titles in the 200 free (1:55.08) and 100 fly (59.14). Lauren O'Mara collected a victory in the 100 breast (1:06.70).

Three seniors finished out their high school competitions with triumphs: Easton's Brooke Bielecki in the 50 free (25.09), Hedda Boege from Damascus in the 500 free (5:10.03) and Fallston's Madison Brown in the 100 back (1:01.99).

Boys
Poolesville's boys squad amassed 327 points to claim the team title, with Damascus taking second (160). Just 15 points separated the third through sixth positions, with Queen Anne's taking third (139), C. Milton Wright fourth (137), Seneca Valley fifth (129.5) and Fallston sixth (124).

Poolesville swept the relay events. The 200 medley relay team of sophomore William An, juniors Jack McCarty and Jacob Weiss, plus sophomore Anthony Kim, combined for a 1:44.93 victory. Junior Xavier Laracuente and senior Jake Rubenstein joined Lin and McCarty for a 1:32.19 for the 200 free. Clocking a 3:21.85 in the 400 free relay were Lin, Laracuents, junior Patrick Krisko and Rubenstein.

Laracuente picked up wins in the sprint free events, posting times of 22.12 in the 50 and 48.56 in the 100 free. Liu gave Poolesville 20 more points with his 2:01.55 triumph in the 200 IM.

Griffin Alaniz, a freshman at Rockville, topped the field in the 200 free (1:48.48). Other event champions included Fallston senior Austin Appel in the 100 fly (53.45), Mitchell Reynolds, a Frederick junior, in the 500 free (4:56.19), Patuxent sophomore Chris Kahl in the 100 back (54.57) and Cambridge SD junior Nolan McMahon in the 100 breast (1:01.10).
