High School State Championships: Wyoming Girls 3A and 4A

GILLETTE, Wyoming, November 2. JACKSON Hole High School earned its second straight Division 3A championship, and Campbell County regained the title it lost last year in Division 4A, at the Wyoming State High School Swimming and Diving Championship Oct. 31-Nov. 2.

Division 3A
The Lady Broncs scored 351.5 points this year for their victory. Powell finished second with 163 points. Buffalo claimed third by 1.5 points over Lander (134-132.5). The margin of victory was even tighter for fifth–by just one point, Worland slipped ahead of Kemmerer (103-102).

Jackson Hole was led by senior Connor Tarver, who erased the 3A record in the 100 back with her 57.62 and also won the 200 IM (2:12.34). Tarver earned her third straight title in the 100 back, finishing ahead of Natasha Schlup’s 1999 division mark of 58.27. Tarver successfully defended her title in the 200 IM, having finished third in 2011.

Tarver also swam on the division record-setting 200 medley relay (1:52.59) along with sophomores Avery MacFarland, Alanna DeMuro and Elsa Smith; and the 400 free relay (3:42.92) with sophomore Kiana Phelps, junior Jaime Pardee and Smith.

Jackson Hole’s 200 free relay set another division relay standard with their 1:41.47, erasing Buffalo’s 1999 mark of 1:41.90. The relay consisted of Phelps, Pardee, Smith and Krause.

Hannah Chapin closed out her career at Buffalo with a sprint free sweep. She defended her victory in the 50 free, improving from 25.00 last year to 24.53 at this meet, and improved on last year’s second-place finish (54.75) with her 53.39 in the 100 free. Teammate Gracie Meacham earned her third straight victory in diving competition with this year’s 386.40 points.

Sonya Legerski, a junior at Sublette, finished just ahead of Buffalo’s Thiele in the 100 breast (1:13.16-1:13.37). In an even closer finish involving two juniors, Worland’s Carolyn Kennedy defended her title in the 100 breast by 14-hundredth over Rawlins’ Katelyn Olson (1:02.34-1:02.48).

Powell sophomore Amanda Tracy took charge in the 200 free, posting a 1:59.79 for her title. Morgan Gramlich, a junior at Lander, finished first in the 500 free (5:27.64), having turned in a runner-up performance last year (5:33.93).

Division 4A
Last year, the Camels had their six-year title streak snapped with a third-place finish. The team regrouped and earned the title back with this year’s total of 280 points. In a tight battle for second through fourth places, Cheyenne East emerged on top (199) over Sheridan (187) and Laramie (184.5). Cheyenne Central grabbed the fifth spot with 140 points.

Campbell County was led by a strong sophomore class. Katie Carsrud touched the wall in the 500 free just ahead of Sherican senior Payton Brilz (5:24.96-5:25.13) and Annie Waldum finished first in the 100 breast for the second straight year (1:07.54). Two more sophomores–Sunshine Roberts and Emmalee Carsrud–joined senior Sage Riss and Rylie Pilon to capture the 400 free relay in 3:44.85.

Laramie sophomore Ryleigh Kobbe earned a second straight diving title with a final point tally of 417.35. Two other swimmers–Cheyenne Central senior Taylor Segrave and Cheyenne East junior Abby Urban–improved from third-place performances in 2012. Segrave improved from 25.20 to 24.80 to take the 50 free, and Urban dipped under the 2:00 mark in the 200 free (1:58.17) to better last year’s 2:01.75.

Iliana Jones, a Kelly Walsh junior, earned first place in both the 100 free (52.20) and 200 IM (2:07.62).

Sheridan’s Emily Spiegelberg finished her high school swimming with an individual victory in the 100 back (58.72), and led off the winning 200 medley relay, followed by seniors Gretchen Dougherty and Britz, plus sophomore Mackenzie Dougherty (1:51.36).

Cheyenne East’s Halley Jankovsky cruised to a 1:01.86 first-place swim in the 100 fly and swam a leg on the Thunderbirds’ victorious 200 free relay (1:43.17) with classmates Erica Sull, Brianda Johnson and Abby Urban.
