High School State Championships: Rhode Island Boys and Girls

KINGSTON, Rhode Island, March 1. LASALLE Academy claimed the girls team championship and Bishop Hendricken was the top boys squad at the Rhode Island State Championship meet Feb. 24-25 at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston.

La Salle's Lady Rams put together 307.5 points for their fifth straight title, with North Kingstown (237) and Prout (232) fighting for second. In another close battle, South Kingstown took fourth by two points over Cumberland, 186-184.

Georgie Pettibone gave LaSalle two individual victories with her 1:06.52 in the 100 breast and 2:10.01 in the 200 IM. Pettibone also swam on LaSalle's victorious 200 medley relay with Ivanna Andrews, Karolyn Sundberg and Jess Trupiano (1:56.71) and 200 free relay with Andrews, Lauren Kowalski and Kelsi-Mariah Oresman (1:44.79).

North Kingstown's quartet of Jess Rudman, Livvy Huber, Samantha Pelletier and Emily David combined for a 3:47.46 triumph in the 400 free relay. David claimed first in the 100 free (55.81).

Cumberland's Courtney Kent secured two wins with her 1:54.38 in the 200 free and 5:00.39 in the 500 free, as did Bianca Spinazzola from Narragansett in both the 50 free (24.49) and 100 back (58.21). Angelica Spinazzola earned first place in the 100 fly (1:00.60).

An even more impressive winning streak was kept alive as the Bishop Hendricken Hawks landed their 23rd straight Rhode Island swimming title with 308 points. North Kingstown finished in second (214), followed by Barrington (199), South Kingstown (143) and Westerly (124).

Alex Powers was the star of the Bishop Hendricken squad. Individually, he picked up victories in the 200 free (1:46.14) and 100 back (53.33); led off the winning 200 medley relay with Jon O'Connell, Andrew Robinson and Chase Martin; and anchored the first-place 400 free relay of Michael Fedorenko, James Manni and Robinson. Robinson picked up an individual title in the 500 free (4:49.99).

Middletown's Tim Furman also posted two winning times, clocking 1:01.28 in the 100 breast and 2:00.35 in the 200 IM.

Westerly stopped the Hawks from netting all three relay wins with their 1:34.72 in the 200 free relay. The team of Matt O'Brien, Kyle Rohdin, Phil Miguel and Logan Hellwig defeated Bishop Hendricken's quartet of Chase Martin, James Manni, Nick Tomasso and Michael Fedorenko (1:34.98).

Hellwig picked up a first in the 50 free with his 22.30 and came within 8-hundredths of a second victory in the 100 free, losing to North Kingston's Boris Paraliticci, 48.46-48.54. North Providence's Jeff Laliberte, who finished a second behind Robinson in the 500 free, finished first in the 100 fly (52.83).
