High School State Championships: Massachusetts Girls Divisions 1 and 2

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, November 25. THE Massachusetts Fall Girls State Swimming and Diving Championships, postponed for two weeks due to weather, were held Nov. 19 at Harvard University in Cambridge. Both meets were conducted in short course yards.

Division 1
Chelmsford's 200 free relay of MaryKate Cohen, Jennifer Day, Casey Curran and Caitlin Sheridan set the only state record of the competition with their 1:38.19. That bettered the 1:38.26 by Andover from 2000.

Andover squads were victorious in the other two relays. The team of Maeve Awiszus, Ashlee Korsberg, Rachel Moore and Emma Cammann combined for a 1:49.76 in the 200 medley relay; Alexa Korsberg and Margaret D'Innocenzo teamed up with Ashlee Korsberg and Moore for a 3:28.77 win in the 400 free relay.

Andover's Moore was tops in both the 100 back (54.58) and 100 fly (54.27), D'Innocenzo captured titles in the 200 IM (2:02.53) and 100 breast (1:03.72), Ashlee Korsberg finished first in the 200 free (1:51.69) and 500 free (4:53.56) and Deborah Dailey was the top diver (479.80 points).

The champions of the sprint free events were Haverhill's Sarah Broderick in the 50 free (23.85) and Chelsmford's Caitlin Sheridan in the 100 free (51.66).

Andover won top honors in the team race, scoring 481 points to Chelmsford's 273, Acton-Boxborough's 247 and Needham's 247. Needham and Framingham battled it out for fourth and fifth places, with Needham coming out on top, 173-171.

Division 2
Bishop Feehan was the first-place team in Division 2 competition, earning 363.5 points to Reading's319, Bishop Stang's 255.5, Notre Dame-Hingham's 193 and Westwood's 170.

Bishop Feehan was led by Marisa Reidemeister, first in the 100 fly (58.39) and 200 IM (2:09.12); Caitlin Schofield, champion of the 100 back (59.52); and the 400 free relay of Caroline Capece, Maddie Myers, Caroline Steiner and Reidemeister, who put together a 400 free victory with their 3:39.38.

Bishop Stang's 200 medley relay of Olivia Decas, Andrea Gauvin, Maria Lopez and Elizabeth Rose combined for a 1:50.84 win; Kirby Roberts joined Gauvin, Rose and Decas for a 200 free win in 1:42.09.

Taylor Ellis of Notre Dame-Hingham finished first in the 500 free (5:03.30) and 100 breast (1:05.29). Stang's Decas held on to win the 50 free in 24.50 with Westwood's Kate Vanasse (24.62) and Reading's Brenna Melanson (24.67) in close pursuit. Vanasse was tops in the 100 free (53.34). Kaylie O'Connell from Stoneham stayed just ahead of a fast-charging Myers for the 200 free win, 1:57.25-1:57.28.

Westwood's Irina Chiulli was the top Division 2 diver, scoring 491.10 points.
