High School State Championships: Iowa Boys

MUSCATINE, Iowa, February 10. DUBUQUE High School's all-senior quartet of Josh Gill, Alex Duster, James Daughters and Justin Yuan set the only state record at the Iowa Boys High School State Swimming Championships Feb. 9 in Muscatine. They combined for a 1:23.99 in the 200 yard free relay. The previous record of 1:24.58 was set by Cedar Falls back in 2006. Gill's 20.76 in the 50 free gave him an individual title as well.

Muscatine's quartet of sophomore Alex Walton, junior Michael Sovers, plus seniors Travis Greenwald and Matt Krueger's 1:35.24 was good for first in the 200 medley relay. Walton topped the field in the 100 back (50.34), as did Greenwald in the 100 breast (56.46). Senior Haden Calegan contributed an individual win for Muscatine in the 200 IM (1:51.28).

Dowling Catholic's squad of senior Ben Severino, junior Spencer clark, junior John Carmody and senior Jonathan Fiepke claimed the 400 free relay win with their 3:09.44. The relay seniors claimed one freestyle event: Fiepke in the 100 free (44.76) and Severino in the 200 free (1:42.08).

Two Dowling Catholic seniors collected individual freestyle titles: Jonathan Fiepke in the 100 free (44.76) and Ben Severino in the 200 free (1:42.08).

Lewis Central junior R.J. Hemmingsen posted a winning 50.25 in the 100 fly, and C.R. Washington senior Josh Hughes topped the field in the 500 free (4:41.46).

Muscatine, with 180 points, was the team champion. Dubuque's 147 points was good for second, with Dowling Catholic (125), Johnson (125) and West Des Moines Valley (125) rounding out the top five.
