High School State Championships: Illinois Girls

EVANSTON, Illinois, November 24. FOR the fourth straight year, the New Trier Trevians are the champions of Illinois girls swimming–but not by much. They scored 160.5 to 157 for the Downers Grove North Trojans at the Illinois Girls State High School Championships November 22-23 in Winnetka.

The Fenwick Friars earned third place with their 126-point total. The Loyola Ramblers came in fourth (100), followed by the Mundelein Mustangs in fifth (82).

Kirsten Jacobsen set the only state record of the championships with her 1:46.98 in the 200 yard free. The Barrington sophomore lowered Kelly McNichols’ 2005 mark of 1:47.17. Jacobsen came close to a second state standard in defending her 500 free crown with her 4:46.93. Adrienne Bicek still holds the record at 4:46.66 from the 2008 prelims.

Downers Grove North senior Gabby Sims, who will be attending Harvard next fall, placed first in the 100 free for the second straight year (50.12) and regained the 100 back title she had won in 2011 with her 53.93. She swam on both of the Trojans’ winning relays. She led off the 200 medley relay (1:42.22) with junior Gabriele Serniute, senior Maddy Sims and junior Emmy Albrecht. Gabby anchored the 400 free relay of Albrecht, freshman Lindsey Mathys and Maddy Sims for a 3:25.16.

Fenwick senior Mimi Schneider doubled in the 50 free (22.87) and 100 fly (53.86). Schneider is set to join the University of Texas Longhorns next season. Paulina Kaminski, Schneider’s teammate at Fenwick, stroked to a first-place 1:02.40 in the 100 breast.

Sydney Dusel, a sophomore at Naperville Central, won the diving event with a 450.55-point total.

Juniors Erin Falconer, Jennifer Korchick and Rachel Robb–with senior Karrie Kozokar anchoring–combined to give the Mustangs its 200 free relay win with their 1:34.58.

In disabled competition, Francesca Figlioni, a Maine South sophomore, finished first in her classification in the 50, 100 and 200 free (41.64, 1:30.63 and 3:19.16). Waubonsie Valley senior Alyssa Gialamas claimed first in the 100 and 200 free (1:31.61 and 3:06.70) and the 100 breast (2:42.99). Phoebe Mejia, a senior at Glenbrook North, placed first in her category in the 100 breast (2:13.11), and Richwoods junior Samantha Peters finished the 50 free in 41.36.
