High School State Championships: Connecticut Boys

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, March 19. FAIRFIELD Prep's 412 points put them 4-1/2 points ahead of second-place Brookfield High (407.5) to claim the team trophy at the Connecticut Boys Swimming and Diving Championships March 17 at Yale University in New Haven.

Third place went to Greenwich (310), with Amity taking fourth (289) and Darien fifth (269).

Barlow senior Michael Pilyugin set the only state record of the competition with his 50.21 effort in the 100 back. Pilygin also came in first in the 100 free (45.94). Eric Holden, a senior at Amity Regional lowered the meet record in the 100 breast with his 56.29.

Berlin's Dan Klotz, a junior, also touched the wall first in two events, posting times of 1:40.79 in the 200 free and 50.28 in the 100 fly.

Other individual champions included Michael Smigelski, a Southington senior (50 free, 21.14); Ryan Murphy, a junior at New Fairfield (500 free, 4:38.61); and Westfield/Stamford senior Jeff Anderson (200 IM, 1:54.85). Anderson's teammate, sophomore Sean Burston, was tops in the diving competition (494.50 points).

Brookfield's 200 medley relay of senior Jeff Magin, junior Matthew Moen, senior Jack Dunn and sophomore Daniel Krentsa combined for a 1:35.60 victory in the 200 medley relay. Senior Drew Krentsa and junior Luciano De Souza joined Daniel Krentsa and Dunn for a second win in the 200 free relay (1:26.22). Greenwich's quartet of freshman Thomas Dillenger, sophomores Ben Wurst and Alexander Lewis, and junior Matthew Frazer put together a 3:10.74 triumph in the 400 free relay.
