High School State Championships: CIF Sac-Joaquin Boys and Girls

LODI, California, May 17. JUST 11 points separated first from third in the boys competition at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Sectional Championships May 10-12 in Lodi. Granite Bay scored 245 points, two points better than Jesuit (243), and Davis took third with 234. Rounding out the top five teams were Del Oro (229) and Oakridge (196.5).

Davis sophomore Matt Whittle took down the only individual Sac-Joaquin district mark with his 55.74 in the 100 breast. He scored a second victory in the 100 fly (48.98). Davis' 200 medley relay combined for a 1:33.94 for a district mark in that event.

Four seniors finished their high school careers with winning times in their events: Nevada Union's Dillon Virva (50 free, 20.78), Granite Bay's Andrew Murch (100 free, 45.79), Del Oro's Brian Westlake (500 free, 4:27.83) and Vacaville's Pierre Archambeau (200 IM, 1:52.93). Davis freshman Riley Hickman posted a 1:40.30 triumph in the 200 free, and Buhach Colony sophomore Wyatt Brigham was the top diver (248.55 points).

The Davis girls team put together 307 points to claim top honors, ahead of Rio Americano's 291. Granite Bay placed third (225), followed by Vista del Lago (142) and Vacaville (121).

Davis was led by its district record-setting 200 medley relay (1:44.66); double-event champion, junior Tara Halsted (500 free, 4:55.70; 100 back, 55.63); and sophomore Alexandra Rieger, who topped the field in the 100 free (51.68).

Rio Americano's freestyle relays both grabbed district records with their swims of 1:35.94 in the 200 free and 3:28.44 in the 400 free relay. Two seniors claimed district marks in individual competition–Granite Bay's Sophie Weber in the 200 IM (2:00.50) and Tokay's Mary Griffith in the prelims of the 100 fly (53.51). Griffith's final time of 53.75 was good for first; she also grabbed a second win in the 200 free (1:47.88).

Brittany Aoyama, a junior at Linden, emerged victorious in the 50 free, 8-hundredths ahead of Rieger (23.43-23.51). Vista Del Lago senior Stephanie Klotz captured the 100 breast in 1:03.96. Tracy's Cassidy Dolstra was the top diver (250.50 points).
