Helping Young Swimmers Master Body Position Through Snorkel Use (Video)

Need to improve body position in your freestyle swimming? Snorkels are a perfect tool, and FINIS was the first manufacturer to develop those products as training tools. Now, FINIS has introduced the Stability Snorkel Junior, intended for swimmers ages 6-10. The goal of this device, according to FINIS, is to help young swimmers “learn techniques like older swimmers have been learning for years.”

Getting used to practicing in a snorkel can be challenging for young swimmers, so here are six steps FINIS recommends to get swimmers ready for the challenge:

  1. Get comfortable on pool deck, and adjust the head bracket.
  2. Practice breathing through the snorkel before entering the water.
  3. In the shallow end, practice submerging and breathing through the snorkel.
  4. Transition to a floating position, concentrating only on breathing.
  5. Flutter kick with the snorkel.
  6. Add the arms.
