NEW COMMIT: The University of Southern California has picked up a verbal commitment from Kailua Kona, Hawaii’s Maile Lawson who will join the Trojans as a member of the class of 2023.

Lawson swims year-round with Kona Dolphins Swim Club and owns the U.S. Open standard in both breaststroke distances. While competing at the 2018 Oceania Championships in Papua, New Guinea, she set a new Hawaii LSC record in the 100m breast with a time of 1:11.45. She placed 21st in the 200m breast at Junior Nationals this summer and won four events at the Hawaii LCM Championships. She took 18th in the 100 breast and 21st in the 200 breast at Juniors West last winter.

Lawson also competes for Hawaii Preparatory Academy where she is a school record holder and six-time Hawaii State Championship finalist. She won the 100 breast and was the 200 IM runner-up during her junior season. The NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American placed second and fifth, respectively, in those events as a sophomore.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so happy to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Southern California!!! I am extremely excited to continue my academic studies and swimming career at such a wonderful institution! The coaching staff and team made me feel like I was at home since day one! I would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped me and continues to support me!! I am so honored to be part of the Trojan Family!! Fight on!!!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:01.30
  • 200 breast – 2:13.83
  • 200 IM – 2:03.70
  • 400 IM – 4:24.09
  • 100 fly – 56.45
  • 200 fly – 2:05.51

When she suits up for the Trojans at the beginning of the 2019-20 season, she’ll add valuable depth to a breaststroke group that will be led by Maggie Aroesty who won the 200 breast at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships. Lawson would’ve scored in the B-final of both breaststroke events at last year’s conference meet.
