NEW COMMIT: Harvard University has received their first Class of 2026 verbal commitment* from Pleasanton, Calif. native and U.S. Open qualifier Sydney Lu, who will arrive in Cambridge in the fall of 2022.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Harvard University! It is a dream come true to continue my academic and swimming career with the Harvard Swim and Dive family! I want to thank my parents and older brother for their unconditional love and support, Coach Steve Morsilli for bringing out the best in me, and my friends for making every moment meaningful. GO CRIMSON!!! ❤️”

A talented butterflyer, Lu does her club swimming with Pleasanton Seahawks and most recently won five events at East LA Sectionals in December after earning three best times at the Toyota U.S. Open. In summer 2019, she raced two events at Junior Nationals and was a two-time champion at the Far Western LCM Championships.

In October 2019, Lu represented Team USA at the FINA World Cup in Berlin. There, she placed 11th in the 400m IM, 12th in the 200m fly, and 15th in the 100m fly.

Her best times include:

  • 100 fly – 53.68
  • 200 fly – 1:57.93
  • 200 IM – 2:03.50
  • 400 IM – 4:23.87
  • 100 breast – 1:04.45
  • 200 breast – 2:20.55

Currently a junior at Quarry Lane School, Lu placed fourth in the 100 fly at the CIF State Championships during her freshman season. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American also finished second in that event as well as fifth in the 200 IM at the CIF North Coast Section Championships in 2019.

Even with just under two years to go before suiting up for the Crimson at the start of the 2022-23 season, Lu will make a big impact both individually and on medley relays. She would’ve scored in the A-final of both fly events as well as the B-final of both IM events at the 2020 Ivy League Championships where Harvard was the team runner-up.

*IVY LEAGUE DISCLAIMER:* A “verbal commitment” does not guarantee admission. An Ivy League coach cannot guarantee admission but can only commit support in the admissions process.
