Gusztáv Bienerth Takes Over as President of Hungarian Swimming Federation
Following the resignation of Hungarian Swimming Federation President Tamas Gyárfás in late November, Gusztáv Bienerth has been elected to take his place, according to a report from Inside the Games.
Gyárfás faced heavy criticism during the last months at the helm of Hungary’s federation, most notably from Olympic gold medalists Katinka Hosszu and Daniel Gyurta, over poor training conditions and a lack of support for the country’s top athletes.
Bienerth, currently the vice-chairman of the bid committee seeking to bring the 2024 Olympic Games to Hungary, will have a busy few months ahead of him as Hungary prepares to host the FINA World Championships this July in Budapest.
“There is a lot of work to do there. Thank you for your support. I am confident that my leadership successfully fulfills your responsibilities,” Bienerth said, according to Inside the Games.
Hungary won seven medals in swimming at the Olympics in Rio, four by Hosszu and one each from Laszlo Cseh, Tamas Kenderesi and Boglárka Kapás.
