Guilherme Costa Sets New Brazilian Mark In 800 Freestyle At 2018 Brazil Trophy

Brazil’s National Championships, the 2018 Brazil Trophy, continued tonight in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The meet serves as the country’s qualifier for the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, the 2018 South American Swimming Championships, 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.

The second night of finals at the 2018 Brazil Trophy included finals of the men’s and women’s 200 IM, the women’s 1500 free, the men’s 800 free, and the men’s and women’s 200 back and 800 free relays.

Gabrielle Roncatto opened the second night of competition at the 2018 Brazil Trophy with a win in the women’s 200 IM (2:15.45), while Vini Lanza added his second individual win of the meet in the men’s event with a 1:58.10. Viviane Jungblut won the women’s 1500 free (16:28.56), while Guilherme Costa broke Brazilian record in the men’s 800 free in 7:52.54. Notably, second place Miguel Valente was also just under Costa’s old Brazilian record.

Andrea Berrino won a tight women’s 200 backstroke final, touching first by .15 in 2:13.20, just ahead of Fernanda Goeij (2:13.35) and Kira Toussaint (2:13.78). Leonardo de Deus won the men’s 200 back in 1:59.27, giving him his 18th career win at this meet to surpass Cesar Cielo as the Brazilian with the most wins of all-time.

Notably Fernando Scheffer, who won the 400 free in a Brazil record to open the meet, split a 1:44.84 on the third leg of the winning 800 free relay. The top three finishers in events from the second night of finals at the 2018 Brazil Trophy can be seen below:
