Georgia Women and Auburn Men Hold Lead Going into Final Day of SEC Championships

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.February 17. HOLDING their leads at the end of two straight days, the Georgia women's team and the Auburn men go into the final day of the 2006 Southeastern Conference Swimming & Diving Championships with the chance to win the league titles in the final major event at the UT Student Aquatic Center.

Auburn holds a 89-point lead going into Saturday over Florida, amassing 748 points so far this weekend, to the Gators' 659. The Bulldogs of Georgia is 98 points back of the Gators, while host Tennessee is in fourth place, just 17 back of Georgia.

"We are pleased with how the team recovered after a sub-par morning," Auburn head coach David Marsh said. "We really rallied well and had a good evening. I am very happy that Doug (Van Wie) had a chance to go out an SEC Champion in both the medley relay and 100 back. Tomorrow morning is the big day, and we will have to swim very well if we want to catch Georgia's women and stay in the lead on the men's side."

Five of the eight men's teams competing all won an event on Friday night. Georgia's Sebastien Rouault started the evening session with his second triumph of the meet in the 400-yard individual medley (3:44.18). Ryan Lochte of Florida continued with his second individual title, breaking the SEC record in the 100-yard butterfly with a 46.02 clocking.

Alabama's Vlad Polyakov took the 100-yard breaststroke (53.55), while Doug Van Wie of Auburn grabbed the 100-yard backstroke final (47.15). Auburn's team of Van Wie, James Wike, Alexei Puninski and Cesar Cielo also grabbed the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:09.03.

The most amazing win of the meet thus far was turned in by Kentucky's Steven Manley, who took the 200-yard freestyle (1:35.06). The senior became the first Wildcat male to win a freestyle event since the 1957 championship, when Roger Messick doubled in the 50 and 100 yard races.

"It seems kind of weird that I actually won an SEC title," said Manley. "Four years ago, I didn't even think I could get to this point, so to win it seems surreal. I'm so excited. It is one of the first times in my life where I have been speechless, and anybody who knows me knows that isn't often."

Georgia's Chris Colwill won his third SEC diving title of the weekend, outscoring the competition in the men's platform competition. His 432.75 topped Auburn's Steven Segerlin by over 40 points.

"There was a lot of adrenaline running tonight," Colwill said. "I knew I was physically ready, but I had to keep my emotions in check. I was able to keep my composure and win. It's a great feeling to win all three."

On the women's side, Georgia saw their lead shrink by two to 36 points over the Auburn Tigers, totaling 729 points to Auburn's 693. The two are over 200 points ahead of Florida, who stands in third with a tally of 466 points.

The Bulldogs and Tigers both snagged two wins in the individual events. Auburn was led in the 400-yard individual medley by Julie Stupp (4:09.30), while Rachel Goh was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke (53.25).

Georgia's Mary DeScenza became only the second person to win the 100-yard butterfly in four consecutive years with her win in 51.75 tonight. Auburn's Mimi Bowen is the only other women's athlete to accomplish that feat.

The Bulldogs' Kara Lynn Joyce won the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.54), while Florida's Vipa Bernhardt took the crown in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.85). Auburn also took the 400-yard medley relay, as Goh, Stupp, Tawnie Bethune and Emily Kukors clocked a 3:36.33 in the win.

"It was an exciting night for us," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "Kara Lynn (Joyce) had the swim of the night, and Mary (DeScenza) was exceptional as always. We're going to have to be lights out, actually perfect, on Saturday to win. It's way too close. But we weren't supposed to be in this position either. You've got to give all the credit to the kids."

Preliminaries for the last day begin at 10 a.m., Saturday with the 1650-yard freestyle, with finals slated for a 6 p.m. bell.
