NEW COMMIT: Erica Hjelle has given Georgetown University a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2023. The Sandy Spring, Md. native will join the Hoyas as a member of the class of 2023.

Hjelle does her club swimming with Rockville Montgomery Swim Club and has achieved the Winter Juniors standard in her signature event, the 200 breast. She recorded four lifetime bests and made one finals appearance at NCSAs this past summer after notching a trio of personal bests at NCSA Championships in March.

Hjelle is a six-time MPSSAA 4A State Championship finalist representing Sherwood High School. As a junior, she was the 100 breast runner-up and placed third in the 200 IM. She finished fourth in both events as a sophomore and took seventh in the 100 breast during her rookie campaign.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so happy to say that I will continue my academic and swimming career at Georgetown University next year.  I can’t wait to attend such a  phenomenal school and join the amazing team of student athletes.  I could not have done it without the support of my awesome coaches, family, teammates, and friends.  Huge thank you to Coach Leavitt and the rest of the Georgetown Swim and Dive staff for making this possible.  Hoya Saxa!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:04.41
  • 200 breast – 2:19.68
  • 200 IM – 2:04.76
  • 400 IM – 4:28.34

Hjelle will make an immediate impact when she arrives in DC for the 2019-20 season. Both of her best breaststroke times would’ve ranked second on the Hoyas’ lineup last year and she would’ve been a three-time A-finalist at the 2018 Big East Championships. Under head coach Jack Leavitt, Georgetown finished second in the team standings at last season’s conference meet.
