Night two of the 2018 RBC Canadian Swimming Championship took place at the Pan Am pool tonight, where swimmers contested the 100 freestyle, 400 IM and the 800-freestyle relay.
Many national junior team members were in action tonight. Joshua Liendo followed up his 100-fly record scare with a 100 freestyle victory, and Cole Pratt finished second once again. Also competing was local swimmer Sarah Watson, who came up just short of her second gold in the 100.
Women’s 100 Free
Youth prevailed in the 13-14 age category, as two 13-year-olds topped the podium. Leading the close race was Edmonton’s Chistey Liang in 58.09, followed by Etobicoke’s Elan Daley in 58.12.
Fourteen-year-old Dylan Scholes came in for a close third in 58.53.
It was all Raphaelle Dandois-Samson in the 15-17 age category. The 16-year-old from Montreal led the field with the only sub 27 in the first 50 and never looked back, touching to win in 56.64.
Local Winnipeg swimmer Watson came second in 57.04
Men’s 100 Free
It was another duel between Liendo and Pratt in the 14-15 100 freestyle tonight, and Liendo got the best of it once again with a swift 51.19. These two will go head to head twice more in the men’s 200 butterfly and 200 freestyle.
Pratt touched in 52.19 and Edouard Fullum-Huot put up a third sub 53 swim with his 52.29.
The 16-18 100 fly champion Guillermo Cruz also doubled up tonight with his 100 freestyle win tonight, finishing with a 51.29.
Justin Konik and James LeBuke rounded out the podium.
Women’s 400 IM
Thirteen-year-old Katrina Bellio picked up another win tonight in the girls 13-14 400 IM. Bellio was the only swimmer in the age group under 5:00.
It was a close race for second between Ashley McMillan and Catherine Minic.
In the older age category, it was a battle between Junior Pan Pac team mates Emma O’Croinen and Victoria Kwan. Kwan led through 200, but O’Croinen ran her down in the last 100 to touch for the win with a 4:52.62.
Kwan held on for second in 4:53.04.
Men’s 400 IM
15-year-old Jacob Galant from Fredericton blew away the field in the 14-15 boys 400 IM. Gallant led from start to finish, winning with an excellent time of 4:27.85.
Eric Brown was second and Matthew Cyr was third.
The 16-18 boys race was much closer, albeit a bit slower. Charles Millette of Montreal got his hand on the wall first in 4:31.62.
His teammate Patrick Hussey was second in 4:31.93
Women’s 800 Free Relay
Island Swim Club won the women’s 800 free relay in 8:19.84. Etobicoke was a distant second in 8:23.07.
Chantel Jeffrey of Island had the fastest split in 2:02.86.
Men’s 800 Free Relay
The men’s 800 free relay was all Cascade swim club, who finished in 7:38.96. Cascade was very consistent across all four legs, splitting 1:55, 1:55, 1:53, 1:54.
Etobicoke came second once again in 7:47.09.
