NEW COMMIT: South Dakota State University has received a new commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Futures qualifier Austin Smith of Elkhorn, Neb.

He told Swimming World:

“After visiting campus and learning about their engineering program, I felt that SDSU was the place for me. My goal is to help the team in scoring points at meets my freshman year. Swimming has been such a big part of my life thanks to my family, coaches, and teammates.  I look forward to college swimming. Go Jackrabbits!”

Smith does his club swimming with Aquatic Club of Elkhorn and most recently picked up a pair of best times at Jenks Sectionals last month where he placed 12th in the 200m IM and 15th in the 100m fly. In Summer 2019, he finaled in five events at Jenks Sectionals before going on to race three events at Des Moines Futures.

His best times include:

  • 50 fly – 23.63
  • 100 fly – 51.06
  • 200 IM – 1:53.86
  • 100 free – 47.06
  • 200 free – 1:44.12

Also competing for Elkhorn South High School, Smith is a six-time Nebraska State Championship finalist. He placed third in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 free as a junior while taking ninth in both the 100 and 200 free during his sophomore season.

Smith will have a big impact when he arrives on campus as a member of the Class of 2025. He would’ve scored in the B-final of the 100 fly and 200 IM at the 2020 Summit League Championships where the Jackrabbits finished third overall in the team standings.
