NEW COMMIT: Sophie Hampson of Orlando, Fla. has opted to stay in-state for her college career after verbally committing to Florida International University beginning in the fall of 2020.

Primarily a distance freestyler with strong IMs, Hampson does her club swimming with Blue Dolfins and most recently placed 10th in the 1500m free at Greensboro Futures this past summer after recording three best times at Gainesville Sectionals. She raced five events at the Florida Spring Championships in February and placed 20th in the 800m free at Southern Zone Sectionals in March. Also competing for Oviedo High School, Hampson finished 16th in the 500 free at the Florida 4A State Championships during her junior season. She is also a British National qualifier in the 1500m free.

She told Swimming World:

“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and swimming careers at FIU next fall. I am beyond grateful for all the support I have had throughout the years from my coaches, family and teammates, and am looking forward to have the opportunity to share this experience with my sister, Chloe #GOPANTHERS”

Her best times include:

  • 500 free – 5:00.78
  • 1000 free – 10:19.71
  • 1650 free – 17:13.05
  • 200 IM – 2:10.59
  • 400 IM – 4:34.47

When she suits up for the Panthers as a member of the class of 2024, Hampson will be a valuable asset in their distance freestyle group. She would’ve scored in the B-final of the 500 free as well as placed top-10 in the mile at the 2019 Conference USA Championships where Florida International earned their fifth-straight conference title.
