NEW COMMIT: Distance freestyler Alice Ciobanu of Stockton, Calif. has announced her verbal commitment to San Jose State University and will suit up for the Spartans as a member of the class of 2024.

Ciobanu does her club swimming with Tiger Aquatics and most recently placed 16th in the 1500m free and 19th in the 200m free at Mount Hood Futures after earning bronze in the mile at Santa Clarita Sectionals. She recorded four top-8 finishes at WCAB Seniors last winter before going on to grab silver in the mile at Far Westerns. Also competing for Lincoln High School, Ciobanu raced the 500 free at the CIF State Championships during both her sophomore and junior seasons.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my swimming career and education at San Jose State University!! It has always been a dream of mine to swim D1 in college and I couldn’t be more proud to call SJSU my future home. I want to thank my friends, family, and coaches for always supporting me in my swimming career, I couldn’t do it without you! Go Spartans!! #spartanup”

Her best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:54.22
  • 500 free – 5:01.46
  • 1000 free – 10:26.78
  • 1650 free – 17:27.40

Ciobanu will add much-needed distance depth to the Spartans’ lineup when she arrives in San Jose at the start of the 2020-21 season following the graduation of current senior Erin Wayman. Ciobanu is just shy of scoring range at the Mountain West Championships but has made consistent improvements each season.
