By Brian Savard

GRESHAM, Oregon, February 26. FRESHMAN swimmer Crystal Kibby of Cascade made quite the impact in her first high school state meet at the Oregon 1-4A State High School Championship meet. Kibby started off her meet winning the 200 IM (2:12.48). Later on in the meet, Kibby conquered the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:08.65.

North Bend freshman Rachael Heaney joined Kibby among the double event winners. Heaney's times in both the 100 fly (59.71) and the 500 freestyle (5:07.97) placed her well ahead of the second place swimmer.

Henley senior Stephanie North swept the sprint events, taking both the 50 freestyle (24.44) and the 100 freestyle (53.29) by sizable margins. Denise Green, a North Bend senior, took the gold medal in both the 200 freestyle (1:56.88) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.01).

North Bend prevailed in the women's meet, winning the team title with 64 points. Henley placed second with 44 points while Cottage Grove took third with 30 points.

Newport senior Michael Mpitsos recorded the only All-American consideration time of the meet, which he recorded in his 100 butterfly win (51.87). Mpitsos also bested the competition in the 100 backstroke (53.59). Sweet Home freshman Kieran Schaefer edged the field with gold-medal performances in the 200 freestyle (1:49.57) and the 100 freestyle (49.40).

Blanchet Catholic junior Andy Ottolia won the 200 IM (1:59.81) and ran away with the 100 breaststroke title (1:01.12) despite adding nearly a second from his preliminary time.

Cottage Grove snared all three relay titles. The 200 medley relay comprised of sophomore David Elligott, sophomore Jon Berg, senior Carson Meyers and junior Cameron Barton won in a 1:47.10 time. The 200 freestyle relay (senior Shayne Barnes, junior Cameron Barton, Berg and junior Zachary Taylor) edged out Newport's foursome, clocking 1:33.94. Cottage Grove's 400 freestyle relay (Barton, Elligott, Meyers and Taylor) closed out the meet with a first place time of 3:23.87.

Despite Cottage Grove not winning an individual event, they won the men's team title (79). Sweet Home (51.5) and Newport (32) took home second and third place, respectively.
