NEW COMMIT: The University of Alabama has earned a new verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from Isabella Matesa of Lebanon, Ohio.

Primarily a sprint freestyler, Matesa owns a pair of Winter Juniors standards and does her club swimming with Mason Manta Rays. She recently placed 14th in the 100m free at Geneva Futures after earning gold in the 50m free at Ohio Junior Olympics. In March, she recorded two best times at the Southern Premier Invitational where her highest finish was an 11th-place showing in the 50 free.

Also competing for Ursuline Academy, Matesa is a three-time Ohio State Championship finalist. She finished fifth in the 50 free and ninth in the 100 free as a junior after racing to 12th in the latter event during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic careers at the University of Alabama! I would like to thank my family, coaches, and teammates who have supported me throughout this process! I cannot wait to be a part of such an amazing school and team! Roll Tide!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.27
  • 100 free – 50.49
  • 100 fly – 56.83
  • 200 IM – 2:08.77

Matesa will add valuable sprint depth to Alabama’s lineup when she arrives in Tuscaloosa as a member of the class of 2024. She has steadily made improvements each season and will join a training group that’ll be led by Kalia Antoniou and Flora Molnar.
