Freestyler Davis Caldwell Commits to United States Merchant Marine Academy
NEW COMMIT: Isle of Palms, South Carolina freestyler Davis Caldwell has announced his commitment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) beginning this fall.
Caldwell swims year-round with South Carolina Swim Club and most recently competed at Greensboro Speedo Sectionals where he recorded a lifetime best in the 100 free. He recorded five top-15 finishes at the SC SCY Championships and placed fourth in the 800m/1500m free combo at the LCM Championships this past summer. Also competing for Wando High School, Caldwell finished second in the 200 free and fourth in the 500 free as a senior at the South Carolina 5A State Championships.
He told Swimming World:
“I chose the United States Merchant Marine Academy because it’s a unique opportunity as one of the 5 federal service academies. Including the semesters at sea, USMMA will provide me with real world experience I’ll need to succeed after graduation! The coaches and team were all super welcoming when I met them on my visit and I’m looking forward to training and competing as part of the team at Kings Point for the next four years! Go Mariners!”
His best times include:
- 100 free – 48.90
- 200 free – 1:46.09
- 500 free – 4:46.83
- 1000 free – 10:01.14
- 1650 free – 16:56.02
Caldwell will add valuable depth to the Mariners’ freestyle group when he arrives on campus as a member of the class of 2023. He would’ve scored in the B-final of the 200/500 free at the 2019 Metropolitan Conference Championships where USMAA earned the team title.
