Frederick County School Board Keeps High School Swimming
FREDERICK COUNTY, Maryland, January 22. A loud and proud gathering of swimming supporters turned the tide in Frederick County, Md., as the county's Board of Education decided to eliminate competitive swimming as a budget cut target during a meeting yesterday according to The Frederick News-Post.
Previously, the board had targeted the nine high school swimming programs within the district as a potential cutting point to save nearly $800,000 in expenses as the county attempts to deal with a current budget crunch.
"I don't think the board is ready to vote to close the pools, and we've certainly heard from the community," Board member Michael Schaden told The Frederick News-Post. "If we aren't going to cut it, we shouldn't put the community, the parents and swimmers through that angst."
