Former Australian Head Coach Brian Sutton Arrested at Age Group Championships in Sydney
In reports from multiple Australian news outlets, former national team coach Brian Sutton was arrested in Sydney at the junior national championships going on this week.
Sutton, who was once the head coach of the Australian men’s national swim team, was arrested at 11:30 AM Wednesday morning at the Sydney Olympic pool after he refused to leave the venue.
Sutton did not have a credential to enter the pool deck and he tried to gain pool access via another person’s accreditation. Swimming Australia authorities recognized him and asked him to leave to which he refused, thus prompting them to call police.
Authorities said he was taken to Auburn Police Station but then later released and taken to Westmead Hospital with a shoulder injury.
Swimming Australia said Sutton was banned from the meet for the rest of the week and it was considering further sanctions in the coming weeks.
Sutton was sent home from the 2003 World Championship team in Barcelona for failing to show up for a staging camp in Germany.
“Sutton was allowed to stay in Australia for two days on compassionate grounds after the team left for Germany a week ago but was sacked from the team when he dedcided to take an extra day without getting appropoval from Australian Swimming,” Swimming World reported back in 2003.
Sutton lost his position as head men’s coach a week after this incident in 2003 and retired from competitive coaching in 2004 due to a number of cancer scares. He now works as a high performance consultant to a number of Australia’s top swimming organizations.
