NEW COMMIT: Gainesville, Fla. backstroker and current high school junior Lain Shahboz has verbally committed to in-state Florida Gators as a member of the class of 2024.

Shahboz is no stranger to Florida’s program, as she swims year-round with Gator Swim Club and owns the Winter Juniors standard in both backstroke events. She most recently competed at NCSAs where she achieved a trio of best times after recording three top-5 finishes at the Florida Spring Championships. She won the 200m back at Florida LCM Seniors before racing four events at Cary Futures this past summer.

Also competing for P. K. Yonge Developmental Research School, Shahboz is a four-time Florida 1A State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won the 100 back and took third in the 500 free during her junior season after placing fourth and sixth, respectively, in those events as a sophomore.

She told Swimming World:

“I am super excited to announce that I have verbally committed to swim at The University of Florida. I would like to thank my family, friends, and coaches for helping me along the way and making swimming in college possible!! I can’t wait to begin this new chapter in my life! Go Gators!!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 back – 54.95
  • 200 back – 1:59.87
  • 400 IM – 4:29.73
  • 100 free – 51.50

Shahboz will add valuable backstroke depth to the Gators’ lineup when she suits up at the start of the 2020-21 season and will add her talents to a training group which will include Mabel ZavarosRosie Zavaros and Celi Guzman.
