Flash! Lochte Continues Hot Run; Wins 200 IM At SECs With Fastest Swim in History

GAINESVILLE, FL, February 17. RYAN Lochte of the host Florida Gators set all new records in the 200 yd Individual Medley at 1:41.76, splitting 22.94, 25.25, 29.89 and 23.68.

As great as Lochte’s swim was, it would be hard to say that it was a surprise that he’d break the record in his primary event after his relay lead-off performances of Wednesday night. He opened Florida’s relays with a 20.92 backstroke on the SEC record-setting 4 x 50 medley relay and 1:33.07 to lead off the fastest 4 x 200 free relay in history with the third-fastest individual 200 yd freestyle ever, second American(trailing only Great Britain's Simon Burnett’s 1:32.22 for the University of Arizona at the Texas Invite last December and Matt Biondi’s long standing American record of 1:33.03.

Lochte was the silver medal winner for the USA in the 200 IM in Athens, just edging fellow conference athlete George Bovell (Auburn), representing Trinidad-Tobago.

Ironically, Bovell previously held the US Open and NCAA records at 1:42.66, the fastest 200 yd IM in history. Bovell lost his grip on his SEC meet record of 1:43.73, as well.

In a further bit of irony, Bovell is also in the SEC meet this year but chose to swim the 50 freestyle, where he tied for third with an NCAA “A” time of 19.72.

US Olympian Nate Dusing of Texas previously held the American record at 1:42.85.
