NEW COMMIT: Georgia Tech has earned a new verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from backstroker Astrid Dirkzwager of Wichita, Kansas.

Dirkzwager, who owns three Summer Juniors standards, swims year-round with Wichita Swim Club and most recently placed 24th in the 200m free at Des Moines Futures this past summer after racing to seventh in the 200m back at Jenks Sectionals. Last winter, she won both backstroke events at the Missouri Valley SCY Championships before going on to earn bronze in the 200 back at Columbia Sectionals.

Also competing for Wichita East High School, Dirkzwager is a six-time Kansas 6A State Championship finalist. She won the 100 free and 100 back as a junior after finishing first in the 100 back and second in the 200 free during her sophomore season. The NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American also earned gold medals in the 100 back and 200 free during her rookie campaign.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Georgia Tech! Thank you to all of my friends, family, and coaches who have helped me throughout this entire journey! GO JACKETS!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.47
  • 100 back – 55.30
  • 200 back – 1:58.63
  • 200 free – 1:49.63

When she suits up for the Yellow Jackets as a member of the class of 2024, Dirkzwager will add her talents to a backstroke group led by Alexandra Paschal. Although she’s just shy of scoring range at the ACC Championships, she has continuously made improvements each season.
