Federica Pellegrini, Gregorio Paltrinieri Lead 35 Italians to Rio

The Italian Swimming Federation announced a 35 member roster for the 2016 Olympic Games. The Italians will be represented by 17 women and 18 men.

Federica Pellegrini leads the women. The 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the 200 freestyle is currently ranked third in the world in the event. The 27 year old also holds the world’s sixth best 100 freestyle this year.

Ilaria Bianchi will head to her third Games in Rio. European championships gold medalist Diletta Carli enters her second Olympics in Rio.

Martina Carraro, Arianna Castiglioni, Martina De Memme, Silvia Di Pietro, Erika Ferraioli, Sara Franceschi, Chiara Masini Luccetti, Alice Mizzau, Margherita Panziera, Aglaia Pezzato, Stefania Pirozzi, Alessia Polieri, Luisa Trombetti and Carlotta Zofkova also complete the women’s team.

Gregorio Paltrinieri is the world record holder in the 1500 freestyle and currently tops the world rankings. Rio will be Paltrinieri’s second Games. Gabriele Detti sits fifth in the world this year in the 400 freestyle.

Simone Sabbioni set the men’s national record in the 100 backstroke at Italian Nationals in April. He currently sits 13th in the world this year in the event.

Marco Belotti, Federico Bocchia, Piero Codia, Andrea Mitchell D’Arrigo, Alex Di Giorgio, Luca Dotto, Luca Leonardi, Filippo Magnini, Luca Marin, Marco Orsi, Luca Pizzini, Matteo Rivolta, Michele Santucci, Andrea Toniato and Federico Turrini will be the other men competing.
