Fast Times at Virginia 2A/3A High School Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Virginia, February 27. MAGGIE Walker (girls) and Western Albemarle (boys) nabbed the Division 2 titles, while George Mason (girls) and Hidden Valley (boys) emerged as champions of Division 3 at the Virginia 2A and 3A Swimming and Diving Championships February 20-21 in Christiansburg.

Division 2A
Maggie Walker Governor’s School claimed the girls title with 416 points, with George Mason taking second (332), Bruton third (314), Virginia (135) and James River (122).

Maggie Walker was led by first-place champions Gabriela Monasterio (100 back, 1:01.90), Ellie Deglau (500 free, 5:19.06) and Lauren Parker (200 IM, 2:14.62), as well as several top-three finishers. They also earned relay victories in the 200 free relay with the quartet of Livvy Call, Emma Bilski, Katherine Webb and Gabbie Fleming (1:44.53) and the 400 free relay (3:56.12) with Olivia Ratlif, Kathryn Strait, Isabell Russell and Deglau.

George Mason’s Erin McFall, Beth Cashin, Francesca King and Julianne Kelly nabbed the 200 medley relay (1:56.59). Cashin posted winning times in both the 50 free (24.59) and 100 breast (1:08.64), and McFall took charge of the 100 free (55.03).

Bruton’s Erin Morrow’s 2:02.74 gave her the event title in the 200 free. Kara McHaney of Madison County was the only sub-1:00 swimmer in the 100 fly (58.93). Liz Graham from Virginia High was the top diver, scoring 259.75 points.

The Mustangs of George Mason dominated the boys championship, scoring 377.5 points. Maggie Walker took second (265), followed by Marion (200), Bruton (194.5) and Virginia (144).

George Mason swept the relays. Nick Roberson, Miller Surette, Jared Britton and Austin Gogal came from behind to capture the 200 medley relay in 1:40.32 to Maggie Walker’s quartet of Matt Lynch, Andrew Drummond, Ryan Buscaglia and Geoffrey Gill (1:40.46). Britton and Gogal were joined by Daniel Reinfurt and Andrew Hokaj for a victorious 200 free relay (1:34.74). Right behind them was Bruton’s squad of Scott Racoosin, Ryan Robinson, Joey Morrow and Trevor LeForge. The Mustangs ended the meet with a 3:19.53 first-place 400 free relay of Surette, Justin Britton, Jared Britton and Roberson.

Individual titles were claimed by Britton in the 50 and 100 free (21.72 and 48.60) and Roberson in the 200 free (1:47.79). Also emerging from the meet with two event victories were Goochland’s Justin Edwards (100 breast, 1:01.42; 200 IM, 1:55.44) and Glenvar’s Ben Kennedy (100 back, 51.61; 100 fly, 49.80).

Andrew Duggan gave Maggie Walker first-place points in the 500 free (4:39.55). Virginia High’s Ivan Moore was the 2A diving champion, putting together 283.15 points.

Division 3A
The Western Albemarle Warriors claimed their first 3A title after three straight wins in Division 2A with 304 points. Cave Spring finished second (267), with Lafayette third (221), Colonial Heights fourth (198) and Blacksburg fifth (142).

The Warriors’ 200 free relay took first with the team of Brazil Rule, Lexi Campbell, Storrs Lamb and Remedy Rule (1:37.79). Remedy Rule earned individual titles in both the 100 back (55.97) and 100 fly (55.41).

Cave Spring’s quartet of Hailey Bivens, Tessa Muzzy, Paige Assaid and Lauren Cowher grabbed the 200 medley relay (1:47.89); Bivens anchored the victorious 400 free relay (3:36.58) of Maggie Harman, Allie Lawson and Paige Assaid. Cowher posted a winning 24.15 in the 50 free and Bivens collected a triumph in the 100 free (51.62).

Abigail Richey from Colonial Heights swam to first-place finishes in the 200 and 500 free (1:50.12 and 4:54.33). Brookville’s Ashley Mauzy cruised to a 2:08.13 in the 200 IM, and Annie Lane conquered the 100 breast with her 1:04.03. Blacksburg’s Pearl Harst scored 360.65 points for the diving championship.

Hidden Valley’s Titans dueled the Lafayette Rams to a 233-222 on the boys side. Kettle Run finished four points behind Lafayette to claim third (218). York came in fourth (196.5), followed by James Monroe (169).

Lafayette’s 200 medley relay of Carter Kale, Brett Huckstep, Conor Flannery and Deke Lueker put together a triumphant 1:39.10. Kale posted a 4:45.21 to conquer the 500 free.

Kettle Run’s James Patrick swept the sprint freestyle races, going 21.60 in the 50 free and 47.59 in the 100 free. Zachary Webb added 20 points to the Cougar cause with his wining 51.42 in the 100 fly. Connor Webb, Scott Heckathorn, Zachary Webb and Patrick combined for a 3:18.25 in the 400 free relay.

The 200 free relay went to York’s quartet of Dean Johnson, Brian Lee, Brendan Klein and Kevin Mastracci, who finished just ahead of Kettle Run’s team of Nicholas Fallows, Heckathorn, Zachary Webb and Patrick (1:29.23 to 1:29.34).

William Byrd’s Michael Craddock enjoyed victory in the 200 IM (1:53.86) and came from behind to take the 100 breast in 59.82 over John Champe’s Joaquin Gabriel’s 59.87. Brad Allison of James Monroe dueled Lord Botetourt’s Jay Austin in the 200 free, 1:44.80 to 1:44.97; Austin returned later in the meet to take charge in the 100 back with his 53.22.

Christiansburg’s Ronnie Piemonte was the top diver, putting together a 464.95-point win.
