Eric Nilsson Named Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. January, 25. FRESHMAN Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) has been named Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week after winning three events and swimming a leg on Northwestern's pool-record-setting 800 free relay Friday against No. 19 Notre Dame.

Nilsson won the 200 free, 500 free and the 200 fly to finish first in three events in a dual meet for the first time in his career. He then swam on the Wildcat 800 free relay squad that turned in a time of 6:33.85 to break the Norris Aquatics Center pool record set in 1999
by Arizona State. The time fell just .5 seconds short of besting the oldest school record still on the books.

The award is the first of Nilsson's career.

Nilsson is the third NU swimmer and fourth Wildcat to earn Big Ten weekly honors this season, the most of any school in the conference. Juniors Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) both have been honored twice, and sophomore diver Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) earned Diver of the
Week honors once.

Northwestern's six overall awards also is the top total in the conference.
