All eyes will be on Ella Eastin this week as she chases the overall national high school record in the 200 individual medley at the inaugural California swimming and diving state championships. The meet will be held in Clovis, with the right to call themselves true California state champions on the line for all athletes.

Last week at the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championships, Eastin beat her own national independent school record with a 1:53.90. That’s just eight hundredths of a second off Dagny Knutson’s overall record of 1:53.82 from 2008. Eastin will also go for a sub-1:00 100 breaststroke, a feat that is rare among high school swimmers.

Among the four swimmers who set national high school records last week in California, Eastin is the only one attending the state meet. But the competition will be filled with others looking to make a big impact in Clovis. Alex Valente, a member of the USA Swimming national junior team, will be looking to break the 46-second barrier in the 100 butterfly and chase Joe Schooling’s national high school record of 45.50. Valente swam a 46.00 in last weekend’s Southern Section Division I finals. Valente will also swim the 100 backstroke, and will be looking to unseat top seed Bryce Medford. The two are the only swimmers seeded with times under 49 seconds and could produce a fast final.
