Ed Moses Signs With Speedo; Contract Makes Him One of World’s Highest-Paid Swimmers

By Phillip Whitten

PHOENIX, April 16. ED Moses, who recently set out-of-this-world world records for the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke (short course) and was one of two headliner athletes for Adidas, has switched his allegiance to Speedo, SwimInfo has learned.

Moses signed a very lucrative, multi-year contract with the swim suit giant, Speedo, earlier this week. The contract extends through 2004, with options to extend it. According to Moses’ agent, Evan Morgenstein: "This makes Ed one of the highest paid swimmers in the world. This will allow him to buy a whole fleet of Tahoes" (see Swimming World, April 2002).

Adidas’ other star swimmer, Australian Ian Thorpe, will remain with the company that reportedly is paying him over one million dollars a year.

Moses told SwimInfo: "I’m very glad to be part of such a great swimming family. Speedo has taken swimming to another level and I am excited to be involved."

Stu Isaac, Speedo’s Vice President for Marketing, commented: "We have watched Ed’s career closely – not only his successes, but his enthusiasm as well. We have long hoped to bring him into the Speedo family and when Adidas gave him the option of going elsewhere, we were presented with a great opportunity and we acted on it."

Isaac commented that Moses will be a major part of Speedo’s 75th anniversary celebrations next year and is also serving as a consultant for the development of the next generation of Speedo swim suits, which will be unveiled before the 2004 Athens Games.

"Because of the way the international market has changed," Isaac said, Speedo is the only global swimwear company, and we are thinking globally. Ed’s got the success, the attitude and the personality to become an international star.

"You don’t break through internationally just because of your swimming success. Swimming is filled with world record-holders who are unknown outside the sport. But Ed’s got the persona to make it: young, a little bit edgy, a swimmer for the 21st century."

"Ed will be part of Speedo’s campaign – that swimming is cool. In fact, he’ll be an important part of that campaign.

Morgenstein, Moses’ agent, commented: "Ed has proven that he is one of the best swimmers in the world. When this opportunity to have Ed swim in Speedo presented itself, we felt very fortunate. Speedo is celebrating its 75th anniversary and Ed will
be a major focus of their upcoming marketing and promotional campaign.

"Ed joins 17 of my other clients with Speedo. Team Speedo has created one of the most remarkable group of elite swimmers in the World. Ed will take his place with the greats in this sport such as Janet Evans, Summer Sanders, Josh Davis and many others as Speedo endorsers. This relationship fits like a Fastskin!"
