Eastern Michigan Women, Yale Men Top NCAA Div. I Academic All-America Swim Teams

PHOENIX, April 22. THE women of Eastern Michigan University and the men of Yale University topped the NCAA Division I Team Academic All-America Rankings for the fall 2005-06 term, according to statistics released by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).

In all, some 79 Division I women’s teams ands 53 men’s teams met the minimum 2.80 team grade point average requirement. Seventy women’s teams and 31 men’s teams averaged 3.00 or higher.

Women

EMU’s women, coached by Peter Linn, topped all Division I teams with a 3.56 gpa. Manhattan College, coached by Walter Olsewski, was second at 3.53, followed by the University of South Carolina, coached by Don Gibb, at 3.52.

Rounding out the top five were Gardner-Webb University (coached by Michael Simpson), fourth at 3.49 and Washington State University (coached by Erica Quam) and Butler University (coached by Maurice Stewart) tied for fifth at 3.46.

Among the NCAA’s top 10 teams, the following also earned Academic All-America honors: Auburn (3.20), Georgia (3.30), SMU (3.25) and California (3.00).

Men

The men of Yale University, a team that is taking steps to recapture past glory, boasted the top gpa among all men’s Division I teams. Coached by Frank Keefe, the Yalies compiled a 3.42 team gpa. Xavier University, coached by George Rathman, was second at 3.35, while Missouri State, coached by Jack Steck and Randy Horner corralled the #3 spot at 3.26.

Coch Tim Murphy’s Harvard Crimson were fourth at 3.23. Tied for the fifth spot at 3.22 were Ball State University, coached by Bob Thomas, and American University, coached by Mark Davin.

Among the NCAA’s top 10 teams, the following also earned Academic All-America honors: Auburn (2.88), California (3.19), Michigan (2.91) and Georgia (2.97).
