Eastern Illinois Sweeps Panther Invite

CHARLESTON, Ill., November 6. EASTERN Illinois men's swimming won the Panther Invitational held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31-Nov. 1, at Lantz Natatorium with a combined total of 649 team points, thanks to six individual winners and five relay victories.

Rich Wahlgren and Bill Senese, who each won two individual events and were part of four relay winners, led the Panthers. Tom Watson also won an individual event and was part of two relay winners.

Wahlgren won the 200-yard free (1:46.97) for the fourth straight meet and the 100-yard free (48.53) for the second time this season.

Senese captured the 50-yard free (21.67) for the fourth straight meet and the 200-yard back (1:59.52) for the first time this season. Each was a member of the 200-yard (with Eric Peterson and Paul Anderson), 400-yard (with Watson and Anderson) and 800-yard (with Watson and Frank Muchna) free relay teams and the 400-yard medley relay (with Paul Luttinen and Peterson).

Wahlgren and Senese lead the Panthers with seven individual victories this season. Watson meanwhile also won the 500-yard free (4:48.27) for the fourth straight meet and tallied his sixth individual victory. Luttinen claimed his first individual victory in the 100-yard fly.

The other Eastern winner was the 200-yard medley relay team of Joe Rhodes, Tyson Beaman, Luttinen and Peterson, who claimed their first victory in the event after finishing second twice this season.

Second place finishers included Watson in the 200-yard and 1650-yard free, Wahlgren in the 50-yard free, Senese in the 100-yard back, and the 200-yard free relay team of Matt Holben, Beaman, Rhodes and Watson.
Eastern's team score of 649 was more than 200 points better than second-place Valparaiso (411). IUPUI (341) barely defeated Butler (337) followed by Millikin (234) and Lincoln College (173).

Jordan Sherbrooke won the 500-yard free (5:17.03) and was also part of two winning relay teams. Sherbrooke's victory in the 500-yard free was her team-high eighth individual victory of the season and the third meet in a row in which she has won the event. Sherbrooke also teamed with Jenny Curry, Megan Frawley and Allison Putt to win the 200-yard free relay (1:42.31) and with Brittany Wininger, Curry and Frawley to win the 800-yard free relay (8:15.75).

Claire Garvey won her second individual event of the year in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.11). Garvey had previously won the 200-yard IM at Xavier last month. Second place finishers included Sherbrooke in the 200-yard free and 200-yard breaststroke, the 800-yard free relay team of Kristen McCoy, Taren O'Toole, Garvey and Putt and the 400-yard free relay team of Sherbrooke, Curry, Frawley and McCoy.

With the victory Eastern won its first meet of the season and did so by outscoring second place IUPUI (478) by more than 200 points. Valparaiso(475.5) finished on the heels of IUPUI in third place followed by Butler(336), Millikin (121) and Lincoln College(81).

For IUPUI, Sophomore Kristen Krey (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont/University College) had an excellent meet for the Jaguars. She started off the meet by swimming a Mid-Con season-best 24.62 on the leadoff leg of the 200 free relay. She followed that up by winning the 50 free in 24.89. She also had a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (1:03.47) and 200 backstroke (2:16.54) events. She also swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team that clocked the third-quickest time (3:44.72) in the event in school history. She was joined on the winning team by fellow sophomores Lindsay Corn (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli/School of Technology) and Brandi Kropf (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge/School of Education) and freshman Amy Rowe (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central/School of Liberal Arts).

Corn and Kropf also were individual winners. Corn's time of 54.32 in the 100 freestyle was the seventh-fastest time in school history in the event. Kropf edged Krey in the 200 back with a team season-best clocking of 2:16.20.

IUPUI swimmers also set five other team season-best times. Sophomore Kelly Miller (Aurora, Ohio/Twinsburg/University College) and freshman Jen Montgomery (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central/Kelley School of Business) each picked up a pair and sophomore Lindsay Anderson (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport/School of Science) one. In Miller's specialty, the butterfly, she finished second in the 100 yd. race in 1:01.08 and third in the 200 yd. race in 2:17.49. Her 200 time was the tenth-best ever at IUPUI. Montgomery continued to show her versatility early in her career as she set season-best marks of 5:31.30 in the 500 free and 4:51.67 in her second place finish in the 400 IM. Anderson splashed to a team-best 19:37.88 in the 1650 free.
