NEW COMMIT: Duke University has picked up a huge verbal commitment for the 2023-24 season and beyond from Gibson Holmes of Cincinnati, Ohio. He’s one of the top recruits in his class given his speed and versatility.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am honored and excited to announce my verbal commitment to both swim and study at Duke University. As soon as I stepped on campus, I had an immediate connection with the Duke coaches and athletes. The resources and community provide me with the utmost confidence that I will fulfill my goals both in and out of the water. I would like to thank my family, coaches, and teachers for helping me in my recruiting journey. GO BLUE DEVILS ??

Holmes does his club swimming with Mason Manta Rays and achieved three best times at the Phillips 66 International Team Trials earlier this summer where he posted a trio of top-24 finishes. He earned bronze in the 200 fly last winter at Juniors East, also racing to sixth in the 100 fly and eighth in the 400 IM.

He also impressed at the Southern Premier Invitational in March, winning the 100 fly and coming in second in the 500 free, third in the 200 free, fourth in the 100 free and 10th in the 100 breast.

His best times include:

  • 200 IM – 1:44.59
  • 400 IM – 3:55.94
  • 200 fly – 1:42.95
  • 100 fly – 46.77
  • 100 breast – 55.32
  • 500 free – 4:27.03
  • 200 free – 1:37.37
  • 100 free – 44.55
  • 50 free – 20.52

A rising senior at Hill High School, Holmes is a five-time individual Ohio State Championship gold medalist, winning three-straight titles in the 100 fly and two in the 200 IM. He’s also a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.

He made waves back in January for breaking records formerly held by national standouts.

Holmes is a huge get for the Blue Devils, as he would’ve been their fastest 200 flyer and 200 IMer a season ago in addition to ranking in the top-5 in the 100/200/500 free, 100 fly and 400 IM. He would’ve been an A-finalist in the 200 fly and B-finalist in the 200 IM at the 2022 ACC Championships.
