Dominik Mark Torok Pulls 200 Triple as Wisconsin Sweeps Minnesota

Dominik Mark Torok Pulls 200 Triple as Wisconsin Sweeps Minnesota

Dominik Mark Torok won three 200-yard events for Wisconsin Saturday as the Badgers swept out Minnesota away from home.

The men’s team claimed a 178-120 victory in Minneapolis. The Wisconsin women likewise romped to a 181-119 win.

Torok swam to victories in the 200 butterfly (1:45.36), the 200 breaststroke (1:58.39) and the 200 individual medley (1:47.60). The 200 breast was a 1-2 finish with Matthew Segal, who also won the 100 breast in 54.40.

Torok was joined by a pair of double winners in Yigit Aslan and Jake Newmark. Aslan went 9:09.48 to win the 1,000 freestyle and 4:25.35 to prevail in the 500 free. Newmark got to the wall first in a tight 100 backstroke race, clocking in at 47.91. His win in the 200 back came by more than a second in 1:46.65.

Ben Wiegand went 20.09 seconds in the 50 free, part of a 1-2-3 result for the Badgers. Taiko Torepe-Ormsby was second with Andrew Benson third.

Newmark, Segal, Torepe-Ormsby and Wiegand went 1:39.13 to win the 200 medley relay. Benson, Chris Morris, Luukas Vainio and Newmark went 2:58.07 in the 400 free relay.

Minnesota won a race in each half of the meet. Bar Soloveychik went 1:38.01 to edge Vainio by .09 to win the 200 free. Davide Maria Harabagiu, who finished second in the 100 back, won the 100 fly in 48.40. Kaiser Neverman was second in the event, as he was in the 200 fly and the 100 free. Soloveychik was second in the 500 free. The Golden Gophers won both diving events, YuTong Wang picking up both wins.

The Wisconsin women’s team met little resistance, with Mackenzie McConagha, Hazal Ozkan and Abby Carlson winning two individual events each.

Ozkan went 1:02.53 to win the 100 breast and 2:14.62 in the 200 breast. She also finished third in the 200 IM.

Carlson dominated the 200 free with a time of 1:46.88 and the pulled out a tight race in the 100 free in 49.91. McConagha’s time of 53.94 gave her a win in the 100 fly, as did the 53.35 she posted in the 100 back.

McConagha and Ozkan teamed with Phoebe Bacon and Hailey Tierney to win the 200 medley relay in 1:39.13. Carlson, Tierney, Blair Stoneburg and Bacon clocked in at 3:19.82 to win cap the meet with a 400 free relay victory.

Stoneburg won the 500 free in 4:49.67 ahead of teammate Paige McKenna. Stoneburg had been second to Maddie Waggoner in the 1,000 free. Bacon was second to Carlson in the 200 free. She won the 200 back in 1:56.51, winning by nearly five seconds. Tierney claimed the 50 free with a time of 22.66.

Minnesota’s lone swimming wins were supplied by Megan Van Berkom, who blew away the 200 fly field with a time of 1:57.50. She added the 200 IM crown in 2:00.15 after having finished second in the 200 breast. Paula Rodriguez Rivero was second in both backstroke events. Minnesota dominated both diving events, putting forth the top five scorers on both boards. Elna Widerstrom was on top of both events.
