Division I: UNLV Splits with UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. Jnauary, 29. THE UNLV swimming and diving team split a meet at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, with the Rebel men (7-1) taking a 156-106 win, while the UNLV women (5-4) dropped a 147-115 contest.

On the men’s side, three double-winners sparked UNLV, as they won 10 of 13 events on the day. Johan Claar won both distance events in the meet, taking the 1000 free in 9:26.74, and swimming 4:32.48 in the 500 free for first place as well. Brandon Nelms won both the 50 free (20.49) and the 100 free (45.70), while Jonas Anderson was first in the 100 (57.99) and 200 breast (2:06.81). Also winning events was Richard Hortness in the 200 free (1:40.64), Joe Bartoch in the 100 fly (48.97), and Tamas Bosnyak in the 200 IM (1:5.17). Hortness, Nelms, John Byers, and Bartoch teamed up to win the 200 free relay in 1:22.67.

For the UNLV women, they had four single event winners. Lani Seaman took first in the 1000 free (10:21.73), Kim Bonney in the 100 breast (1:05.70), Marina Sandback in the 50 free (24.10), and Bailey Kuestermeyer in the 200 breast (2:19.42). The Rebels also won the 200 free relay, with the team of Katie Wronn, Sandback, Bonney, and Lauren Browning.

The Rebel men are finished with their dual meet season, while the women will next take on Colorado State in Fort Collins on Friday, Feb. 3 at 4 pm.
