Division I: Indiana Competes at Ohio Tri-Meet

COLUMBUS, Ohio. Jaunary, 27. THE No. 15 Indiana women's swimming and diving team will look to make up some ground on Jan. 28 as the Hoosiers finished the first day of competition on Jan. 27 against No. 14 Penn State and Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio with a 100.5-85.5 deficit against the Lady Lions. Meanwhile, the Hoosiers dominated the hosting Buckeyes to lead 136-50 in their meet. Sophomore Christina Loukas and junior Annica Lofstedt paced the Hoosiers with a pair of event titles.

In the opening event of the evening, the Hoosiers placed second with the sixth-fastest time in the 400-yard medley relay in school history. The contingent of junior Leila Vaziri, freshman Sarah Stockwell, freshman Allison Kay and Lofstedt registered a B-cut time of 3:44.77 for second place. The Penn State quartet of senior Sarah Haupt, freshman Abby Hoisington, senior Amberle Biedermann and sophomore Molly Crispell finished first in 3:41.78. Meanwhile, the OSU team of junior Steph Fennell, junior Rebekah Rychvalsky, junior Gulsah Gunenc and freshman Elaine Chan took third in 3:52.09. Also of note, freshman Caitlin Heyman recorded a personal-best 100-yard backstroke time of 59.38 as the leadoff leg of IU's seventh-place C team.

In the 200-yard IM, senior Kristen Bradley touched second in a B-cut time of 2:03.21, while freshman Allison Kay registered a personal-best time of 2:05.25 for fifth place. That effort now stands as the eight-best in program history. Meanwhile, Penn State went one-three as freshman Kaitlin O'Brien won the event in 2:02.79 and classmate Kelly Nelson finished third in 2:03.64. Additionally, freshman Abby Cooper clocked a career-low time of 2:08.04 for 10th.

Penn State and Ohio State took the top three in the 500-yard freestyle. OSU senior Nicole Maglich placed first in 4:51.08, while PSU junior Nikki Collins (4:51.96) and junior Erin Morris (4:53.17) claimed second and third. Senior Lauren Torpey paced IU in the event with a sixth-place 4:57.19. Meanwhile, sophomore Christie Fuchs recorded a personal-best time of 5:07.71 for 11th.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, the Hoosiers fared a bit better with a two-three showing. Stockwell finished second in B-cut time of 1:04.43, while freshman Abby Cooper took third in 1:05.09. Penn State's Hoisington captured the crown in 1:03.86. Meanwhile, Bradley clocked a personal-low time of 1:06.54 for seventh.

Penn State won the 200-yard backstroke as Haupt touched first in 1:59.18. Vaziri finished second for the Hoosiers in a B-cut time of 2:01.01. Additionally, PSU's Morris placed third in 2:02.43. Also of note, Heyman recorded a career-low time of 2:12.62 for ninth.

The Hoosiers broke into the win column in the 100-yard freestyle when Lofstedt blazed to first in a B-cut time of 50.87. Ohio State freshman Elaine Chan took second in 52.10, while PSU's Crispell finished third in 52.20. Notably, freshman Kristin Cihoski posted a career-low time of 52.94 for eighth place.

In the 200-yard butterfly, Gunenc snared the title in 2:00.64, while Penn State's Biedermann finished second in 2:00.92. Kay improved her own eight-best time in school history in the event with a third-place 2:00.93, which tied PSU freshman Karie Haglund.

Indiana closed out the swimming portion of the evening with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Vaziri, Lofstedt, Wentworth and Cihoski touched first in 1:34.19, while PSU's team of Haupt, Biedermann, junior Genie Cheng and Morris finished second in 1:34.79. Ohio State's squad of Chan, Maglich, sophomore Linda Kristianson and sophomore Griet Buelens took third in 1:35.43. Notably, freshman Sarah Jones leadoff time of 25.27 in IU's seventh-place C team cleared her previous personal best time in the 50-yard freestyle.

On the diving side of the meet, IU diving dominated with a top-five sweep in the one-meter and a top-two finish in the three-meter. Loukas swept the event titles in amazing fashion.

In the one-meter competition, Loukas won with a 322.20 tally, while junior Lindsay Weigle took second with a 289.58. Senior Heather Chapman rounded out the top-three with a 265.50, while sophomore Ashley Greene (248.03) and classmate Jade Summerlin (235.34) closed out the top-five sweep. Notably, Loukas' effort in the event set the pool record.

In the three-meter event, the defending Big Ten Diver of the Week posted the highest score with a 332.92, while Weigle picked up second with a 299.56. Penn State's Courtney Adlam broke into the top three with a 279.98.
