Distance Freestyler Tierney Shimansky Makes Verbal Commitment to South Carolina

GAINESVILLE, Florida, October 29. THE University of South Carolina took a distance freestyler from Gator Country today, getting a verbal commitment from Gator Swim Club’s Tierney Shimansky.

Shimansky made big strides this summer in the long course pool, placing 16th in the 1500 freestyle at junior nationals with a 16:55.49, dropping 16 seconds off her lifetime best. She also chopped a large chunk of time off her 400 free, posting a 4:21.67 that cut eight seconds off her previous best.

Those improvements could translate this fall to the short course pool, at least in the 500 freestyle when Shimansky competes for Buchholz High School in the state championships. She currently holds a 4:57.16 as her lifetime best in the 500, from a sectional meet earlier this year. As for the 1650 freestyle, she swam a 17:01.58 at last December’s junior nationals, and could dip well into the 16-minute range in her next outing.

“I am very excited to be a Gamecock!” Shimansky told Swimming World today.
